The earlier you start, the better off you’ll be. Since I stared later in the semester, I had to choose a variable star based on it’s period. Although you need to be looking at the period when you’re choosing (some have a period of hundreds of days, can’t do those!) what you should be doing is also looking at a star’s magnitude. The star I ended up with was very dim and as a consequence this project became ten times more difficult. I would recommend choosing a bright variable star so when its brightness does change, it will be a lot more noticeable for you.

Start the project as soon as you have a clear understanding regarding the project. Try to have it done before the deadline and ask Kate for advise, if needed. The project takes a long time, please do not wait until the last minute to start as your project might be incomplete. Also choose a common or bright variable star as it would be easier to detect its change. If anything, ask your instructor for advise, she’s great!
