BUY THE BOOK “The Cosmic Perspective”. The book was recommended but not required. There is no way on God’s green earth that you can pass this course without it

I suggest that you complete all the Mastering Astronomy assignments because they really help you understand the basic concepts, even though the website is not that east to navigate.

First of all, I recommend to buy the book. Second, take notes. Especially take notes on the Mastering Astronomy tutorials. This makes it much easier to access the information instead of having to search through old assignments online. When the time comes to study for the final, it will be very helpful to have easier access to the expanded information gathered from the website. Lastly, don’t feel silly for asking Kate for help. Often, she can explain where the misunderstanding of information happened, thereby clarifying the issue. This class is fascinating, and builds upon previous chapters; so if you have questions early on, be sure to ask so that you will be able to understand the information later.

I would make sure to do all of your Mastering Astronomy assignments, especially if you don’t buy the text book. The website for Mastering Astronomy is pretty annoying, but the information that you learn in the tutorials are incredibly helpful in class. I would also ask any questions that you have on homework and labs during class or office hours because you need to know this stuff and it only gets harder as class goes on. Kate is extremely helpful and never makes you feel like any of your questions are stupid.

To succeed in this course you’ll need to attend every class as well as all the mastering astronomy assignments. The book wasn’t required and even though I had it I found myself not really using it very mush if at all. To tell you the truth taking Astronomy 101 before hand made me much more knowledgable then the average person and thought that that class helped me an extroardinary amount.

To succeed in the semester observational lab, just start as early as possible so that you don’t panic at the last second since and have an ok or poor lab. I would say to do some research about the experiment your doing as well so you’ll be more knowledgable of the subject and understand it better as well. Don’t procrastinate, get it done early like I did.

Success in this course depends on the amount of effort that you are willing to put into it. I did not buy the book which was optional but instead took a lot of notes, filled out the lab tutorials, did all the homework assignments, mastering astronomy assignments and tried to never miss a class. My tip for future students would be to participate and ask questions. If you do, you should be just fine.

I would say that by far the most important part of this course is to attend class. As with anyother class you will become “lost in the sauce” if you choose to not attend.

As many of you have already said, doing the mastering astronomy assignments are probably the most helpful tool to understand material. Although some of them are time consuming and a pain, they really do help. Showing up to class regularly obviously will improve your grade also. If you are still having a hard time understanding homework or material we’re talking about in class, go to kate’s office hours. Going to these office hours definitely helped me.

Review labs frequently. Instead of focusing on the details look at the big picture of how the material learns fits together and supports itself.

To succeed in this class I would recommend to take notes, and complete the mastering astronomy assignments. The mastering astronomy website isn’t the smoothest website to operate but it does help you understand the concepts better for class.

Taking a lot of notes during the class will help with the homework assignments. Make sure to be on top of the homework assignments because there are a lot, and if you are falling behind on getting them done, it’s not going to be fun trying to do them all at once.

Don’t miss any clsses. 2+ hours covers too much material to try and learn on your own time and subsequently will hurt your work, and important concepts sort of get lost. Since we build off of each concept, good attendance is extremely important in making sure the class is easy to succeed in.

Complete all the Mastering Astronomy assignments. they are a great tool to follow up and see if you got an understading in the lecture. If not, Mastering Astronomy should refresh or clarify things. And get the book!

For you to succeed in Kate’s class you need to attend regularly, and stay on top of your homework as well as the labs and mastering astronomy. Even though she is considerate of turning in homework late, it’s still your responsibility to make an effort to do it and turn it in, even though it is late!!!!

I believe that in order to succeed in this class one must be consistent with everything. Show up to class for starters and constantly think about lessons and tutorials to understand them better. I found that I understood the material better once I thought about it a little more. I was then able to consistently solve problems in homework and labs.
