Getting started at the beginning of the semester is probably a huge advantage to completing your assignment on time. By putting the assignment off until the last minute is going to be suicide and you most likely will not finish the assignment completely.

Don’t pick a project unless you’re absolutely certain you have the time, equipment, and general know-how for that project. You don’t want to try astrophotography if you don’t have a decent camera. Similarly, don’t try and do the moon phase lab if you’re not 100% sure you’ll have the time for it. The semester observing project should be about learning a little more about the universe around you with what you already have, or what the class makes, available.

Start early and be consistent. Kate will tell you to start early many times at the beginning of the semester…you NEED to listen to her.

the most important thing about this aspect of the class is the time you given to it. My observing project was alot of fun but it was difficult for me to start. once i started i wanted to know more. so now i wish i would have just started. so my advice to you would be to just get started jump right into it. i did the telescope hunt with a galileoscope and it was painstakingly awesome. if you do this project be sure to do a couple observations over the course of the semester and be sure to get a tripod because it is to hard to keep any object even the moon in your line of sight. i had only a couple nights of observing and wish i had more time to get more results. because you are observing the objects in or around our solar system over time this will help you to see how we move relative to the objects around us. (how the stars move, the planets, the moon and dont try looking at the sun)

Don’t wait until the last second to do your project or you might have a difficult time getting everything in order on the presentation day.

Be sure to start your observing project as soon as possible. It doesn’t pay to procrastinate in this class. If you feel unsure about which project to do, go to office hours and talk about it with Professor Follette.

Start your semester observing project as early as possible, and make sure the weather is not going to affect your observing!

Pick a project option that you are passionate about. If you pick something that you like and are passionate about it, then you will be very driven to learn. This project takes a lot of work but it can be made as a sort of observation hobby. Make sure that you start early because any questions that you have while doing it can be worked through with Kate. picking what you want to do may be the most interesting and beneficial project that you ever encounter during your college career.
